Where to stay in Pulau Redang

中文版Versi Melayu

A total of 14 resorts, which range from budget resorts to five-star luxury resorts, are operated on Redang. Hence, Redang’s resorts should be able to suit the budget and preference of any type of traveller. However, travellers looking for backpacker-style A-frame shacks and campsites should probably head to another island as Redang does not have any of these.

The majority of the resorts are situated at Pasir Panjang’s beach and along Teluk Kalong’s beaches (located at Redang’s eastern side). The only exceptions are Taaras Beach & Spa Resort and Redang Island Resort. The former resort, also known by its old name Berjaya Redang Resort, sits to the north at Teluk Dalam’s beach. Also formerly called Berjaya Spa Resort, Redang Island Resort is located to the south at Teluk Siang.

There is a beachfront on any one of the resorts on Redang. The only exception is Redang Island Resort.

Holiday packages encompassing meals, lodgings, snorkelling trips and return boat transfers between Redang and the mainland are offered by many of the resorts on Redang. These packages are very popular among visitors as they offer the best value for money. Room-only rates which allow guests to choose from a wider variety of meals are also offered by certain resorts. Do pay a visit to the resorts on the side bar to get the latest updates on room rates, prices of packages and facilities as resorts upgrade their services every now and then.

Where to Stay in Pulau Redang

Choose to stay at the beaches of Teluk Dalam or Teluk Kalong if you are looking for exclusive beaches which can provide you with tranquility and privacy. You can choose any one resort from Mutiara Beach Resort, Redang Kalong Resort and Taaras Beach & Spa (Berjaya) Resort. Teluk Kalong’s resorts can offer tranquility and good privacy to its guests as there are no raucous discos or karaokes at those beaches. Teluk Kalong’s three beaches are segregated by rocky outcrops. Redang Kalong occupies the northernmost beach while Wisana, formerly called Amannagappa, is the lone resort on the beach at the middle part. Redang Mutiara sits on the southernmost beach, and is the only resort there since April 2006 after the closing down of the campsites there.

Stay at any resort on Pasir Panjang’s beach to get access to many different choices of beach discos, dining outlets and other activities. Laguna Redang (particularly the rooms with a view of the garden), Redang Holiday Beach Villa, Redang Reef Resort and Sari Pacifica Resort are among the quieter resorts at both ends of the beach. Those who are interested in beach discos and intend to mix with a younger crowd can stay at Redang Bay Resort, Redang Beach Resort and Redang Pelangi Resort.

Choose from Coral Redang Island Resort, Redang Beach Resort, Laguna Redang Resort, Taaras Beach & Spa and Sari Pacifica Resort if you are looking for a higher end of resort to stay at. Taaras provides guests with comfort and privacy since it is the lone resort sitting on that stretch of beach. Guests should be able to find their own private spot on the beach as they will still be able to access two long beach stretches at Teluk Dalam Besar and Teluk Dalam Kecil even though Taaras is large and might receive many guests during on-peak seasons. If you are not a fan of beaches and would prefer to instead seek solace on a hillside, you can choose to stay at Redang Island Resort, which is situated at Teluk Siang close to the airstrip.

Head to Laguna Redang to enjoy the best buffet meal packages. Go to Taaras Beach & Spa if you are looking for great restaurants offering ala-carte food.

Best time to visit Pulau Redang

中文版 | Versi Melayu

Operations of scheduled transport services and resorts are halted from November to February as this is when Pulau Redang hit by the rainy monsoon season. If you intend to visit Redang during this period, you must be prepared to swim, kayak or pay ridiculously high amounts of money to get a person who is willing to go through the turbulent waters to bring you to the island, nevertheless, Berjaya Air is still operating direct flight into the island during this season. A small number of resorts may open as the end of February approaches but the majority of them open in March. You may choose to go to Redang in either March or October if you want to avoid the crowd. This is because these two months are close to the time when the waters are rougher than usual as the monsoon season is about to start or end. The peak periods are during May to August, especially during the school holidays in June. Resorts start to close in the middle of October.

Visiting Redang at different times of the year gives divers and snorkellers seasonal encounters with some species. The largest numbers of green turtles nest during the period of time between May to August. June is likely the most ideal time to see arms and legs as this month is when the waters in Redang are populated by the largest numbers of homosapiens, particularly at the Marine Park.

The easiest way to travel to Redang is to let your travel agent or resort to make the necessary arrangements – then you can just tag along! They will then need to read through sites like GoVisitRedang.com while you can relax and have a drink somewhere. However, if you happen to be the ‘planner’, you can save your time and all the hassle by purchasing an all-inclusive travel package with any one of Redang’s resorts or a travel company which provides transfers on land and boat, food and lodgings along with diving or snorkelling excursions. Although a 3d2n Redang travel packages are popular for trips over the weekend, we would recommend a package of at least 4d3n if you want to truly enjoy Redang, particularly if you are a faraway visitor. Do remember to book early and ahead especially if you intend to visit Redang during holiday seasons and long weekends.

Walk-in guests who intend to only get an accommodation after arriving on Redang should note that the beaches (the resorts are found on these beaches) are neither connected by water taxis nor roads. Hence, it could be quite inconvenient and tend to be quite costly for you to get your own transportation to get around or to get from beach to beach.

The months of March and October, which are almost close to the rainy monsoon seasons, are the most ideal periods of time to go to Redang if you like to play in bigger surf.

Decide when to get to Redang based on this holiday chart. Extra surcharges are laid down by many resorts during peak seasons (e.g. during weekends, public holidays and school holidays). Lower rates are imposed during non-peak seasons. You can either reserve your desired travel package via a tour agent or book directly with the resort (certain resorts offer the option of online booking on their website). Travel packages by certain tour agents also encompass transfers to Kuala Terengganu or Merang jetty via air or land.

Redang is usually brimming with visitors during these holidays, especially during long weekends as well as the school holidays in June. Book early if you plan to go to Redang during these times.

How to get in to Pulau Redang

中文版 | Versi Melayu

Visitors can get to Pulau Redang via direct flights operated by Berjaya Air from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport) in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore’s Changi Airport Budget Terminal. Flying from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore to Pulau Redang

There are two airports from which flights depart directly to Redang and they are both operated by Berjaya Air. A flight from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport) in KL takes 55 minutes whereas a trip from Singapore’s Changi Airport Budget Terminal to Redang takes 80 minutes.

Guests staying at the Redang Island Resort (formelly known as Berjaya resort) will be ferried from Redang’s airstrip, situated near the Kampung jetty, to the resort which is less than 10 minutes away by road. Guests of other resorts, however, would be ferried via van to Kampung jetty, where they would board a boat heading to their respective resorts. Costs for these transfers from the airstrip to van and/or boat are already included for those guests who opt for the ‘fly and stay’ vacation packages offered by Berjaya Air and some of the resorts on Redang. Other guests, however, would need to make prior arrangements with their resorts for these transfers.

Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu

Daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Terengganu are operated by Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and AirAsia. The duration of a flight on either Malaysia Airlines or Air Asia is around 55 minutes while that of Firefly is approximately 60 minutes. Malaysia Airlines flies from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) while flights operated by Air Asia depart from the KLIA2. On the other hand, Firefly planes take off from Kuala Lumpur’s Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (also known as Subang Airport), which is located just 28 minutes from the city centre of KL.

International travellers who fly into KLIA before boarding a flight to Kuala Terengganu from KLIA2, or vice versa, should allocate enough time for travelling between the two terminals. This is expected to be around 15 minutes by taxi or 20 minutes via feeder bus, which departs in 20-minute intervals. On the other hand, travellers should expect a travelling time of approximately 45-60 minutes when transferring between KLIA/KLIA2 and Subang Airport by taxi.

Located 15km away from the town centre of Kuala Terengganu, Sultan Mahmud Shah airport is the airport which serves Kuala Terengganu. In normal traffic conditions, it takes around 30 minutes and 40 minutes to reach Shahbandar jetty and Merang jetty respectively. Travellers can pay a small fee to their resort or travel agent to make arrangements for transport between the airport and the jetty. Alternatively, travellers can purchase a taxi coupon at the Taxi Counter at the airport. The coupon would cost MYR25 to Shahbandar jetty and MYR50 to Merang jetty. Departing travellers should allocate approximately 2.5-3 hours (including check-in time) for transferring between Redang and Sultan Mahmud Shah airport in order to avoid missing their flights.

Recommended arrival time to Kuala Terengganu Airport:

Airlines From Kuala Lumpur Arrival to Kuala Terengganu
AirAsia 7am (KLIA2) 7.55am
Firefly 7.20am (Subang) 8.20am

Travelling by Coach to Kuala Terengganu

Visitors travelling by coach have the privilege of enjoying the picturesque countryside in a relaxing manner. Coaches usually make multiple stops along the journey for meal and toilet breaks. Since there are usually no toilets on a coach, passengers who missed one of the stops but still need to go to the loo should inform the driver or staff of the coach so they will be able to make a stop at the nearest toilet.

Luxury single or double-decker coaches tended to by attentive attendants who serve food and beverages and equipped with massage seats and personal audio-video entertainment systems are offered by many coach companies. Certain companies make it even more comfortable for their passengers by fitting their coaches with snoozer capsule seats that are operated by electricity. These can be horizontally-reclined without occupying the seat space of the rear passenger. As few as 16 to 18 seats are found on the luxury coaches while VIP coaches on a single-decker nowadays normally have 21 to 27 seats in a seating configuration of 1-2. This configuration provides passengers with better comfort as well as a larger space with a wider legroom so that passengers are able sleep comfortably during the long journeys.

Travellers who travel by coach normally need to take a coach which departs at night so they would be able to arrive at Kuala Terengganu or Merang on time to catch the ferry to Redang, which usually leaves for the island in the morning. Hence, travellers should be well-prepared for the overnight journey. Inflatable neck pillows and blinders or a cap would help make a sleep on the coach more comfortable. Warm clothing is also essential since temperatures could be quite low inside the coach. However, travellers get to choose between taking a coach during the day or at night on their return journey. Those who plan to enjoy the scenic countryside view can travel during the day whereas those who plan to spend the day doing some sightseeing around Kuala Terengganu can take a night coach.

Travelling by Coach to Kuala Terengganu from Singapore

The duration of time needed to travel from Singapore to Kuala Terengganu via coach is roughly 9 to 10 hours. However, this may vary depending on the condition of the traffic on the Johor-Singapore Causeway or the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link. Despite that, coaches that travel during the night normally reach Kuala Terengganu or Merang before 8.30 in the morning.

The cheapest coach services are offered by Transnasional. Daily coach services between the Lavender bus station in Singapore, which is situated at the junction of Lavender and Kallang Bahru, and Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bahru are operated by this coach company. Transnasional coaches often stop at Johor Bahru’s Larkin station to pick up passengers on their way up north. This makes the duration of their journeys slightly longer than that of other companies. Passengers heading south back to Singapore can either alight at Woodlands Immigration Checkpoint or at Singapore’s Lavender bus station. Those who choose to alight at the Checkpoint should tell the coach driver that they would not be getting on the coach again after the Checkpoint.

Another company to be considered is Konsortium. Coaches run by this company travel directly between the Golden Mile Complex on Beach Road in Singapore and either Merang jetty or Shahbandar jetty. Konsortium coaches take a shorter time to arrive at their destinations since they take the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link. This in turn means that Konsortium coaches depart from Singapore at a later time than the Transnasional ones. Coaches operated by Konsortium normally stop for pickup at Merang jetty and Shahbandar jetty in Kuala Terengganu at 10am and 11am respectively.

It could be relatively hard to get tickets for coaches from Singapore to Kuala Terengganu during peak travel periods. Instead, travellers could get on a coach bound for Kota Bahru, and then ask to be dropped off in Kuala Terengganu which sits along the way towards Kota Bahru. On a side note, travellers who intend to go to Pulau Perhentian can alight at Jertih, which is 15km away from Kuala Besut, and hail a cab to Kuala Besut. An alternative way is to head north to the Larkin bus station in the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru, where there are a larger variety of coach companies at even cheaper prices! Travellers who intend to go to Larkin bus station can either catch the brightly yellow-coloured Causeway Link bus at Kranji MRT station or head to Ban San Terminal at the junction of Queen and Arab streets to get on SBS170, a Singapore-Johor Express bus. Relatively large groups of travellers can also head to Golden Mile and book a coach to Larkin bus station from any one of the many coach operators there.

Travellers who travel via coach between Singapore and Malaysia should note that there are two points of immigration where they are required to alight from the coach. There is one each at the country of departure and country of arrival. When departing the country, travellers are only required to bring along their passports and valuables while their luggage can be left on the coach. However, the immigration point at the country of arrival requires travellers to bring down all their luggage. So it is advisable for travellers to travel light. Travellers should remember the number plate and markings of their coach in order to get on the appropriate one after passing through immigration checks.

Traveling by Own Car to Kuala Terengganu

Driving to the Eastern Coast of Peninsular Malaysia is a pleasant experience as the condition of Malaysia’s system of roads and expressways is top-notch. Travellers who choose to drive also get to take in the sights of the picturesque countryside. There is no need to worry about your vehicle as both Kuala Terengganu and Merang have short-term car parks which allow you to park your vehicle under the care of security guards and wardens. Open-air parking spaces at Merang would set travellers back for around RM5 a day while lots under shades are priced at about RM10 for a day. It should be noted that parking spaces at Shahbandar jetty are limited. Nevertheless, other carparks are just a stone’s throw away from the jetty.

Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu (approximately 455km):

Drive East (Timor) towards Bukit Besi from KL via Karak highway 2 and the East Coast Expressway (ECE), also called Lebuhraya Pantai Timur (LPT) in Malay, to Bukit Besi (the segment of ECE beyond this point is still being constructed). After exiting the ECE and entering highway 14, head north towards Kuala Terengganu by passing through the small town of Ajil. After the completion of Phase 2 of the ECE, the distance between Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Terengganu is shortened to 410km as drivers can reach Kuala Terengganu directly via the ECE. A drive between the two cities would only take about 3.5 hours.

Penang to Kuala Terengganu (approximately 460km):

Drive east in the direction of Kota Bahru via East-West highway 4, passing through the towns of Grik and Jertih on the way. Proceed south towards Merang or Kuala Terengganu through highway 3.

Singapore/Johor Bahru to Kuala Terengganu (approximately 562km):

Drive onto the North-South Highway, or Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan in Malay, and proceed North (Utara) before exiting at Yong Peng. Drive along highway 1 to arrive at Labis and Segamat and highway 12 to reach Kuantan. Then, proceed by entering the East Coast Expressway (ECE), also called Lebuhraya Pantai Timur (LPT), and drive along until you reach Bukit Besi. After exiting the ECE and entering highway 14, head north towards Kuala Terengganu by passing through the small town of Ajil. An alternative way from Kuantan would be to get onto coastal highway 3, which passes through the towns of Kemaman, Paka and Dungun. This is a more panoramic route but could tend to experience sluggish traffic during rush hours. Travellers who are not in a rush of time can go to Mersing and get onto coastal highway 3 there, then head towards Kuala Terengganu by using that highway.
